WISLEY TRIP

We will be running a coach trip to RHS Wisley on Sat Sept 4th, leaving Hurst Community Centre at 9am, returning at approx 5pm. Tickets £20, of which £5 is a non-refundable deposit in case of cancellation, so that we could at least partially cover our losses.

You will have about 6h to explore Wisley,  which has spent millions upgrading the grounds & buildings and adding new features. There is a shop and separate garden centre. There are many places to eat but picnics can be taken.

Wheelchairs can be hired and mobility scooters pre booked on 01483 224234.

The trip is excellent value as the normal entry cost is £16.50. Please come to HHS on Sunday to book, we are open as usual from 8am.

LATEST NEWS FROM THE SHEDS

We are well into spring now and sales are going very well. There are plenty of bargains to be had with perennials,  particularly peonies which are selling for £6.50 each, and beautiful shades of Iris. These plants are half the price you would pay at a garden centre. I doubt we will be getting many more perennials in stock, as it has become almost impossible to get hold of them,  all our suppliers are running out and do not seem able to get any more. Whether this is due to Brexit or the pandemic, no one seems to know.

However it is a different story with bedding plants. We have plenty of all the usual types including Geraniums, Cosmos and Begonias, the only trouble is because of the cold nights we are experiencing they are not growing on at the pace we require for us to sell on to you. I would guess that we will start selling them on Sunday 2nd May. It's a different story with tomatoes as we have already started selling them, with a warning, as it is not safe to plant them out in the garden until after the last frost and that could be as late as the second week of May. Our selection of tomato varieties is excellent, including Gardener's Delight, Black Opal and other small cherry types, Marmande, Black Russian and other large varieties, and the normal sized Alicante, Ailsa Craig, Golden Sunrise and Roma. All these are 80p each. Tumbling Toms, which are small tomatoes ideal for hanging baskets or large pots, are £1 each. We have peppers that we are selling already along with seed potatoes. Onion sets and some Brassicas, courgettes,  cucumbers, beans and lettuce will soon be available. I should also mention that we have an excellent selection of herbs for sale.

All regulars will know we have a good selection of composts and manure, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to get hold of what we require, particularly at the price we want to pay. Everything is going up substantially but rest assured we will strive to hold prices at their current level. Our supplier of mushroom compost quoted us a price of almost double that we usually pay, but Peter has found a different source which should be available this weekend (25th April) at the usual price.

The current dry spell and cold nights are causing gardeners plenty of problems, and I would advise anyone who buys any type of plant to keep them well watered and sheltered at night.

You may have noticed a new member of staff serving on Sundays. We would like to welcome Amanda to our little group and hope she stays a long time. We still have plenty of room for anyone else who would like to be involved with us on Sunday mornings.

We are planning to hold our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 25th May at 8pm, to be held in Hurst Community Centre. If anyone has 30 minutes to spare, please come along just to see how your society is run and keep us on our toes.

Finally, a plea to you all if you buy plants from us - any pots and trays that they were in and you do not require please return to us as this will help us to keep prices down in future years.

Any queries please call Bob on 07786 744477 or 0208 306 2202.

EASTER SUNDAY

Just a quick post in case anybody checks this, we are open as usual on Easter Sunday, 8.00 - 12.00. We have great value perennials from £3, veg plants at 80p, and the usual range of composts etc.

Some people have mistakenly thought we were closed, probably due to the map which in fact just shows that the community centre itself is shut on Sundays! If I ever find out how to delete this I will do so!!

We will be at the sheds, rain or shine, till the end of October. For up to date information, check out Hurst Horticultural Society on Facebook.

SPRING NEWSLETTER 2021

 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

Well, last year was different wasn't it? I can only hope everyone survived, I haven't heard of any casualties yet but it's still very early in the season and people are coming down to the sheds for the first time, so any news will take time to filter down, but fingers crossed. I don't want to dwell for too long on the pandemic as I believe we have all had enough but I'll tell you how the society survived through last spring and summer.

As most of you know we had to shut in the first lockdown which obviously caused big problems but the committee all kept in touch and came up with ideas of how to keep going. I started to get telephone enquiries from customers wanting compost etc and so did Pat, so it was arranged for Ray to open up for 'appointments ' during the week and we quickly sold out. Peter Dabnor managed to obtain more compost/manure and as lockdown ended that sold out as well. As the summer continued we opened up with reduced hours and tried to respect all COVID laws and regulations and continued to trade well right through to autumn. So despite all the doom and gloom in the spring, we got through and in fact did quite well and Peter Wells was pleased with the bank balance.

Throughout the winter Ray and Pat have worked tirelessly and kept the sheds, compound and greenhouse spick and span and Peter D has ensured we have plenty of stock, particularly compost and manure to suit all tastes. Mick has also been busy weighing out and bagging the chemicals and other items into manageable bags. There have been predictable price increases on composts, some big, but we ordered early and dodged the increases. However once our current stock is sold you will notice price rises.

Peter has been adventurous and last summer he ordered winter veg plugs which sold well and we will continue this. He also ordered seed potatoes and onion sets. In stock we have roses (£5), foxgloves, lupins and penstemons  (all £3), agapanthus blue and white  (2 plants in each pot £5), great value all available Sunday mornings. As in previous years we will be growing our own bedding plants from plugs and buying in perennials for sale later in spring.

We are not planning any coach trips or quizzes this year, but if things change we may run a trip to Wisley later in the year. Many small coach firms have disappeared so it may be difficult to get a decent quote. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

As many of you know, Alan doesn't attend on Sunday mornings any more and he is moving to Broadstairs, so this leaves us short of experience and numbers on Sundays. If any of you can help out for a few hours please let us know. It can be very rewarding, we are not bad company and Ray's cakes are brilliant!

Any enquiries to me on 0208 306 2202 or 07786 744477 or bobbakerblue@gmail.com or in person on Sunday mornings.

LATEST INFORMATION

Following the latest government directives, for the time being we are unable to open on Sundays,  at least until the present situation is resolved.

As soon as the situation changes, information will be published both here and on Facebook.

We have continued to grow flowers and vegetables, and hope these will eventually be available to purchase  (see under SHOP for our stock).

In the meantime, enjoy your gardening!

If you are having difficulty sourcing plants or compost during the lock down,  the Horticultural Trade Association has launched a useful search tool on their website for home deliveries:
